Why Boosted Posts Don't Work (And What to Do Instead)

Every week, churches spend hundreds of dollars boosting Facebook posts. And every week, those boosts generate likes from people in other states, zero new visitors, and a vague sense that "social media just doesn't work for churches."

It's not social media's fault. It's the boost button.

What Boosting Actually Does

When you hit "Boost Post," you're telling Facebook: "I'll pay you to show this to more people." Facebook responds by showing your post to whoever is cheapest to reach — which is almost never your target audience.

You might get 2,000 impressions. Most will scroll past. A handful will click. Almost none will show up on Sunday.

Why It Underperforms

Three reasons:

No targeting control. Facebook's algorithm optimizes for engagement — likes, reactions, comments. Not for people who will actually visit your church. Those are very different populations.

No conversion path. Even if someone sees your post, where do they go next? If the answer is "they see the post and then nothing," that's the problem.

You're competing with professionals. Megachurches, event promoters, and businesses all use Facebook Ads properly. Your boosted post is competing against their managed campaigns with creative strategy and proper targeting.

What to Do Instead

Run proper Facebook and Instagram Ads. Real ads let you target by zip code, age, life stage (new to area, new parent), and interests. You control who sees it and what they do next — sending them to a "Plan Your Visit" page, not just your home page.

Use Google Search Ads. Unlike Facebook, Google reaches people who are already looking for a church. Someone searching "church in [your city]" has high intent. A well-built Google Ad with a clear landing page delivers some of the most qualified visitors you'll ever get.

Apply for Google Ad Grants. If your church is a registered 501(c)(3), you likely qualify for $10,000 per month in free Google Search Ads. Most churches have no idea this exists.

Try retargeting. If someone visited your website but didn't take a next step, you can show them ads as they browse online. Retargeting keeps your church top of mind at a fraction of the cost of cold advertising.

The Bottom Line

Boosted posts are the fast food of church marketing. Easy, cheap, and ultimately unsatisfying. Real results come from real strategy — and a professional paid media strategy is the difference between burning budget and bringing visitors through your doors.
