The 5 Biggest Marketing Mistakes Churches Make (And How to Fix Them)

Most churches aren't bad at marketing because they don't care. They're bad at it because nobody ever showed them what good looks like. After working with dozens of churches, here are the five mistakes I see everywhere — and more importantly, what to do instead.

Mistake #1: Treating Social Media Like a Bulletin Board

Most church social feeds are 90% announcements. "Join us Sunday." "Youth group this Friday." "Don't forget the potluck." The problem isn't the information — it's that nobody follows an account to see a bulletin board. People follow accounts that make them feel something.

Fix: Use the 4:1 rule. For every promotional post, publish four posts that inspire, challenge, or spark a conversation. Mix in quotes from Sunday's message, behind-the-scenes moments, stories of life change, and questions that invite response.

Mistake #2: No Clear Call to Action

A church posts a beautiful graphic of their building and writes "We'd love to have you join us this Sunday!" Great. But where? What time? What do I do when I get there? What if I have kids? Vague invitations get vague results.

Fix: Every piece of content needs one clear next step. Not three. One. "Click the link in bio to plan your visit." "Text VISIT to 555-1234." Make it so easy that someone could act in 10 seconds.

Mistake #3: Posting Whenever Someone Has Time

Random posting produces random results. When you post based on availability rather than strategy, you get inconsistent reach, inconsistent engagement, and eventually — you stop posting altogether.

Fix: Build a content rhythm. Pick 3 days a week. Assign a content type to each day. Schedule two weeks ahead. Consistency beats frequency every time — an account that posts 3x a week reliably will always outperform one that posts 7 days one week and goes dark for two weeks.

Mistake #4: Ignoring Google

People search "churches near me" more than 1.5 million times per month in the US. Most churches aren't showing up.

Fix: Start with your Google Business Profile. Verify it, add photos, keep hours current, and collect reviews. Then consider Google Search Ads — and if your church is a 501(c)(3), you likely qualify for Google Ad Grants, which gives nonprofits $10,000/month in free Google Ads.

Mistake #5: No Follow-Up System for First-Time Guests

Most churches put enormous effort into Sunday morning and then do nothing when someone doesn't come back. A first-time visitor who doesn't hear from you within 48 hours is probably not coming back.

Fix: Build a simple follow-up sequence. Text or email within 24 hours. A personal call within the week. A handwritten card. The churches that grow are the ones that treat every first-time guest like they matter — because they do.

None of these require a big budget or a marketing degree. They require a system and someone who owns it. If your church needs help building that system, our outsourced CMO services include strategy, content, and follow-up systems.
