More than 1.5 million people search "churches near me" every month in the United States. Most churches aren't showing up. Here's how to change that.
Start With Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile is the listing that appears when someone searches your church name or "churches near [your city]." It shows your address, hours, phone number, photos, and reviews on Google Maps and Search.
If you haven't claimed your profile, do it today at business.google.com. It's free and takes about 30 minutes to set up properly.
Once you're in, make sure you have:
- Accurate name, address, and phone number
- Your current service times
- A link to your website
- At least 10 photos (exterior, interior, worship service, kids ministry)
- A description that includes your city and what makes your church welcoming
- Responses to any existing reviews
Collect Google Reviews
Google's algorithm ranks businesses with more positive reviews higher in local search results. Reviews also tell potential visitors that real people have been to your church and had a good experience.
Ask your congregation to leave a Google review. Make it easy — put a QR code in your bulletin or a link in your email newsletter. A church with 50 genuine reviews ranks dramatically higher than one with 3.
Optimize Your Website for Local Search
Your website needs to include the right words to show up in search results. Specifically:
Use your city name naturally throughout your website. Not forced — just present. "We're a church in [City], [State] serving families, students, and adults..."
Include a page or section specifically about visiting. Google loves content that answers common questions.
Make sure your address and phone number appear on every page, ideally in your footer.
Consider Google Ad Grants
If your church is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, you almost certainly qualify for Google Ad Grants — $10,000 per month in free Google Search advertising. This program is specifically for nonprofits and can put your church at the top of search results for "churches near me" in your city at no cost.
The application process takes a few weeks, but it's worth every minute. We help churches apply for and manage their Google Ad Grants as part of our core services.
Be Patient, Be Consistent
SEO takes time. A well-optimized Google Business Profile and website won't produce results overnight — but over 6 to 12 months, the compounding effect is significant. Churches that show up on page one of local search results get a steady, free stream of people in their community discovering them every single week.
